Kalanikai Updates
Shaving the Cocos
February through March signals the time for the shaving of the Coconut Palms (Cocos). This involves climbing the trees using metal clamping bands as opposed to the old method which utilized climbing spikes. The band climbing is better for the health of the trees and safer for the climber.

Why do we do this? The palms develop large pods of coconuts, blooms and seed pods, as well as shedding fronds. Falling coconuts are no laughing matter as falling from the height of a mature palm tree can potentially turn a coconut into a deadly piece of fruit. The same can also be said for the dead fronds as they plummet to the ground.

How often do we do this? As mentioned, the late wintertime typically signals the time to remove this unwanted growth before the nuts are mature and become difficult to cut. This process is often repeated in the early fall, meaning that the palms are trimmed twice a year for most years. The cost is computed into the landscaping budget each year by the Board.

Question: How many kinds of palms are growing on the grounds at Kalanikai?

Waste Line Relining Project Complete
On Monday, March 8th, NuFlow South Pacific, LLC completed the last of the waste line relining project at Kalanikai. This was done utilizing a multi-year contract agreement which allowed the Assocation to get the project done without special assessments.

While this process is not a cheap one, it is an exceptionally long lasting one. We should never have to address leakage of this sort in the future, short of an unforeseen natural event.

A big thank you to Joe and his crew who consistently performed in a professional way!

Also a big thank you to RM Jeremy who kept things rolling during the entire project over both years!
